Why Getting Nutrients From Food Is Better Than Supplements

Supplements can cover some of the nutrients found in whole foods, but there are nutritional components they cannot replicate. Whole foods offer a more comprehensive nutritional blend than supplements typically provide, including fiber, essential vitamins, and antioxidants that support optimal absorption. A serious flaw of supplements is that they can easily lead to a surplus of nutrients without you even noticing, and some vitamins and minerals can be harmful when consumed in excess. Supplements are also often more expensive than whole foods, even when the same nutrients are available from either source. As a best practice, look first at improving your overall diet by incorporating more whole foods before turning to supplements.

One risk of taking supplements is that they aren't tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and can contain hidden ingredients or drugs you don't know about. The FDA classifies dietary supplements as food products rather than drugs, which means they're held to a much lower regulatory standard. And while the FDA does regulate supplements, its practices have been criticized on safety grounds: hundreds of dietary supplements have been found to contain undeclared or banned pharmaceutical ingredients, including some the FDA has specifically warned about. Unsurprisingly, adverse reactions—including hospitalization and death—aren't uncommon. The FDA primarily regulates supplements only after they've reached the public, by which point adverse health events may have already occurred. Beyond these safety limitations, the FDA doesn't regulate supplements for efficacy, either, and manufacturers aren't required to prove their products work. Terms like "pharmaceutical strength" or "all natural" are often untrue or simply unregulated. Supplements can also interact with medications without disclosing it—for example, vitamin K can make blood thinners less effective—and their exact contents often go unstated. Because safety and efficacy vary widely from company to company, consumers are frequently left with questionable products.

Supplements often deliver an excessive amount of a given nutrient, sometimes more than your full daily value in a single serving. Being properly nourished is important, but more isn't necessarily better: excess nutrients become a health issue when compounds build up in the body. For example, too much vitamin B6 can damage nerves, high doses of omega-3s can trigger irregular heartbeat in some people, and excessive vitamin D may increase fracture risk. Supplements containing multiple minerals, or high doses of a single mineral, may also not be fully absorbed, since the body can only absorb so many nutrients at once and minerals compete for absorption. Splitting up high dosages helps the body absorb nutrients more easily, and whole foods tend to do this naturally by delivering nutrients in smaller, more manageable amounts.

Beyond these potential risks, most people don't need supplements in the first place. Unless a doctor recommends them because you follow a restricted diet, have a nutritional deficiency, or have another specific condition, most people are better off meeting their nutritional needs through whole foods. A diet with diverse nutrient sources is associated with a lower risk of diseases such as diabetes, but few studies link supplement use to disease prevention—except where the disease stems from a nutritional deficiency. Even when supplements are a necessary part of someone's diet, a balanced diet still matters: many nutrients are better absorbed from food, and the heat processing used to make supplements shelf-stable can reduce their potency. Specialized, extracted nutrients can't replicate the full nutritional composition of the foods they came from. Some foods also have stronger evidence behind them than their supplement counterparts—for instance, there's stronger evidence that fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and kimchi improve gut health than there is for probiotic supplements. Certain supplement claims are well supported by research, such as magnesium's effectiveness as a stool softener, while others are far less substantial. Studies have found, for example, that melatonin shortens the time it takes to fall asleep by an average of only four minutes—making it, for many purposes, effectively useless. Because efficacy isn't factored into price, even a supplement that does little can still be quite costly.

Nuts are particularly nutrient-dense whole foods, offering important vitamins and minerals—including vitamin E in forms unique to each nut. Almonds are a good source of vitamin E, folic acid, calcium, and magnesium. Hazelnuts are rich in monounsaturated fat and are an excellent source of vitamin E, copper, and magnesium. Pecans are rich in monounsaturated fat and vitamin E, while cashews are a good source of copper and magnesium. Pistachios contain the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. Walnuts are rich in vitamin E—an antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative damage and supports immune function and cellular communication—and, unlike most other nuts, they're made up mostly of polyunsaturated fat. Walnuts are also a great source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the plant-based omega-3 fatty acid.

Minimally processed nut butters with simple, high-quality ingredients, are also an excellent way to get the nutrients nuts have to offer.
